Wishing you a blessed Ascension(should you happen to live in a country or diocese where those in charge are capable of counting up to 4o....)
Children are often confused by Ascension and Assumption, 2 warm weather (at least in this part of the world,) holy days, 3 syllables beginning with "a-s" that involve someone "going up," subtleties such as doing so under ones own steam being missed.
And it seems to me the practice of transferring today's festivities, and the obligations appertaining thereto, although intended to further honor the honoree by making certain that everyone has the opportunity to attend Mass accomplishes the opposite -- it sends a clear message that this is not an important enough commemoration to trump quotidian concerns, whereas the Marian holy day IS.
Badly done, all around...
(I blew it by not having transportation to a place that is celebrating Ascension today, and forgetting that today there is no school Mass... LotH was just find, though, and maybe I can think of something that will not be an imposition on the choir.)
One of my very favorite hymns, words by Thomas Kelly, (I would NEVER dream of singing to any tune other than BRYN CALAFARIA, one of the greats):
Look, ye saints! the sight is glorious:See the Man of Sorrows now;
From the fight returned victorious,Every knee to Him shall bow;
Crown Him, crown Him,Crown Him, crown Him,Crowns become the Victor’s brow,
Crowns become the Victor’s brow.
Crown the Savior! angels, crown Him;Rich the trophies Jesus brings;I
n the seat of power enthrone Him,While the vault of heaven rings;
Crown Him, crown Him,Crown Him, crown Him,Crown the Savior King of kings,
Crown the Savior King of kings.
Hark, those bursts of acclamation!Hark, those loud triumphant chords!
Jesus takes the highest station;O what joy the sight affords!
Crown Him, crown Him,Crown Him, crown Him,King of kings and Lord of lords!
King of kings and Lord of lords!

Sorry to comment here, rather than under last October, but THANKS for the very kind words about Winter's Cold. I'm delighted you enjoyed it, and I hope you do it sometime. You may want to look at my setting of O Magnum Mysterium (commissioned by James Jordan as a companion piece to Morton Lauridsen's stunning setting), and some easy, summer choir anthems: Hineh Mah Tov, Come Down O Love Divine, and When Jesus Wept. They're all published by GIA, and all on the recording Inscape, to be issued soon by GIA ChoralWorks. Blessings, Jerry Custer
Thank you for stopping by, Mr Custer.
I shall look into those anthems.
