All those ciboria?

Watching the Mass from Esplanade des Invalides this morning, I saw something I'd never seen before, or perhaps seen but never noticed -- each concelebrating priest who was NOT at the altar with the Holy Father seemed to be holding his own individual ciborium in front of him during the consecration.
(Obviously not on the corporal...)
Is that typical? I mean, I know it is prescribed in the USCCB guidelines for concelebration, but is it universal?
