The Pope’s British envoy is to visit West London Reform Synagogue on Shabbat amid what its rabbi calls the “most acute crisis” in Jewish-Catholic relations in the past 20 years.
...Rabbi Winer says that “expressions of Jewish anger” over the prayer “have reached a level I do not recall in my lifetime of dialogue, as a rabbi, with the Catholic Church. Rabbinical bodies in some countries have forbidden their rabbis from participating in dialogue with representatives of the Holy See. [That would be unfortunate.... who would be to blame for that decision?]
Antisemitic riots and incidents have occurred in more than a few places.”[More than a few places, no doubt, throughout history... but are you saying they have occurred as a result of this new Good Friday prayer? I would be interested to see an article about this. Otherwise, it's a complete non sequitur] ... the amended text asks God “to enlighten their hearts so that they recognise Jesus Christ”. [I wonder, does Rabbi Winer hold that whatever he believes, as a Jew is, how shall I say this... TRUE? For instance, that there is but one God? I assume so. Would he not wish pagans, or pantheists, or atheists, to come to know this truth as well? Would he not want to share it with them? And if so, why would he expect a Christian to be any less generous?]
