Why? the sliding doors of stupidity...

That is a heart-felt plaint (the question, the "why" not the snarky answer, that's mine,) from a "reform of the reform" musician

as she views a near-moribund community, the results of the dismantling, the destruction of the Liturgy; (then as a consequence of that,) of sacred buildings; (then as a consequence of that,) of parishes, (then as a consequence of that,) of Catholic culture, (then as a consequence of that,) of Catholic practice, (then as a consequence of that,) the very Body of Christ, the Church. (My words, not hers.)
And I begin to fear that she is right, that some of this had to be intentional, but most of it surely was bad results of good intentions.
Satan doesn't need that many ill-intentioned minions to work his wiles, the Forces of Dimness (copyright,) are happy Useful Idiots the Forces of Darkness and help inflate the latter's troop strength.
So if there was a destructive streak, it is important to remember that it was largely, (albeit unintentionally,) self-destructive.
Why? As Peggy's favorite Theological Treatise (http://home.earthlink.net/~ajdlro/bandits.html) has it, "something to do with free will."

But be not a-skeered!
Thankfully, the Sliding Doors of Stupidity are no more able than the Gates of Hell to win at the last.

But Christ never assured Peter there would be no casualties along the way, and it's going to be a long slog back to even where we were before, much less get any further along the road to the City of God.
